Spirit of gold coast World Ocean Day

World Ocean Day on board Spirit of Gold Coast

Each year on the 8th of June,  we celebrate World Ocean Day on board Spirit of Gold Coast in order to raise awareness about Humpback Whale migration and protecting our oceans.

This year we were thrilled to welcome on board a representative from the Australian Marine Conservation Society, Dr Leonardo Guida, who gave Spirit’s customers insightful information about the challenges faced by endangered marine life.

We also counted on the participation of our Spirit Young Whale Warriors, Journeylee and Phoebe representing the generation of young eco-warriors.

It was a delightful day for everyone on board, beautiful conditions, the Gold Coast skyline was shining, and the whales were out to play, see this insight from our lovely customer:

World Ocean Day review

Do you know why World Oceans Day is important and celebrated across the globe each year?

  • 70% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by the ocean
  • Oceans absorb about 30% of carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming
  • The ocean feeds billions of people in the world
  • 80% of the world’s biodiversity belongs to oceans

World Oceans Day ( is a day to take action and raise awareness but it’s a day we should celebrate throughout the year.

How can I support the Oceans? Here are a few ideas that can open your mind:

  • Participate in beach clean-ups: We often partner with Sea Shepherd for beach cleans around the Gold Coast. Keep an eye on our social media to know when.
  • Explore the oceans: “People protect what they love.” – Jacques-Yves Cousteau get outside and explore the oceans around you, you can also join one of our cruises
  • Use your vote to solve ocean issues: Elect public officials that are engaged with conservation and have ocean policies to protect marine life
