Whale show on the Gold Coast

Spirit Announcement – 2018 Young Whale Warrior Winners

Spirit of Gold Coast’s annual Young Whale Warrior competition made quite the splash this season, with some amazing submissions being entered into the competition. However, two entrants in particular stood out, which added quite an interesting twist to this year’s competition!

Spirit was inundated with a number of incredible and creative entries, and as always, we found it very difficult to pick one winner to be crowned the 2018 Spirit Young Whale Warrior. In fact the decision was so tough, we ultimately ended up with TWO budding environmentalists who shared the top prize! And would you believe it… it was a brother and sister duo, Max and Emma Rutherford, who won the coveted title of Young Whale Warrior!

The two young Clover Hill State School students impressed the judges with their creative video submissions, which demonstrated their love and passion for the protection of our beloved Gentle Giants of the ocean.

Max who is 12, along with his sister Emma who is 10, were selected from a pool of entries from Primary School Students across the Gold Coast. The competition asked Students from Years 3 to 6 to submit a video, drawing or written entry to best demonstrate their dedication for marine conservation, for a chance to win the Young Whale Warrior title.

The lucky brother/sister duo have won a Family Season Pass for Spirit of Gold Coast, along with a prize pack including a custom T-shirt, Spirit hat, and the ultimate day on board Spirit with our very own marine biologist Zara King.

Young Max demonstrated a concern for the amount of plastics in our oceans and waterways, and is looking forward to learning more about the Gentle Giants and their fragile ocean ecosystem.

“I love whales and everyone who knows me knows I am passionate about the war on waste and the environment,” said Max.

Likewise, young Emma also shares a mutual concern for our majestic marine mammals and is passionate to learn even more.

“I know I will be a great ambassador for the Spirit of Gold Coast as the Young Whale Warrior, I can’t think of anything that better compliments my passion.” said Emma.

The Spirit Team were impressed with all the entries, and Spirit Of Gold Coast spokeswoman Angela Del Bianco said her Team created the award to instigate an opportunity to connect with the next upcoming generation of marine biologists, environmentalists and activists.

“With the Humpback Highway on our doorstep, we feel it is our responsibility to create opportunities for young people in our community to connect with and protect this natural phenomenon,”

“Our team were so impressed with the high caliber of entrants received for this years’ competition and we are amazed by the passion and love evident, not only for whales but for the preservation of our natural environment as a whole.”

“On behalf of the team at Spirit of Gold Coast I would like to extend our congratulations to Max and Emma and we look forward to connecting with them on board the Spirit of Gold Coast and expanding their knowledge of the animals they have shown an interest in conserving.” said Angela.

Mrs Del Bianco and Ms King kicked off the Young Whale Warrior competition in July by visiting a number of local Gold Coast Schools, with the aim of educating and nurturing the next generation of marine guardians.

“I am looking forward to passing on my knowledge of the marine environment to the next generation,” said Ms King.

“I hope the Young Whale Warriors will learn new information about whales and the oceans that surround us and I hope they will be enthusiastic in wanting to pass the information along to help save our environment.” said Ms King.
